Portsmouth got their campaign up and running with a 1-0 victory against promoted Luton Town, with both sides expecting to be up there come the end of the season.

In the end it was a rather low-key affair, with a solitary Jamal Lowe goal separating the two sides.

On the opening day, the magnitude of such a win is perhaps not so obvious, but if this game fell in April it would almost certainly be a promotion six-pointer.

As for the Hatters, they offered stout opponents and the size of the test should not be underestimated.

Perhaps Nathan Jones' side will feel hard done by, but it was a harsh welcome to League One. The margins are tight, the difference between a promotion challenge and a relegation battle perhaps fewer than four wins.

Kenny Jackett's side should be amongst the front runners for the top six, but did we see any evidence of that this Saturday? What did we truly learn about Pompey? Here are three things FLW picked up on the opening day at Fratton Park.

Jackett mixed it up a bit, with the formation looking much more like a 4-4-2 than the 4-5-1 he played last season.

New signing Ronan Curtis appeared to partner Brett Pitman in a standard 4-4-2, offering more of an attacking threat than in the latter stages of last season. It mirrored the Hatters line up perfectly too.

Fine margins exist at every level, but if James Collins shot had been an inch lower with his late effort then Luton might have come away with the point they perhaps deserved.

Pompey had just 42% possession and four fewer shots at goal than their visitors, so maybe a win was fortuitous in the end.

Jamal Lowe has improved with every game since his switch from the National League South eighteen months ago and if this performance is anything to go by, he's going to up it a gear this time around.

He took his goal well, for a quick wide player he has an instinct in front of goal and this could be his season to shine.
