Huddersfield Town's seven-game unbeaten run came to a shuddering halt on Saturday, as they lost 3-1 to Preston North End at Deepdale.

Goals from Jayden Stockley and Alan Browne had given North End a 2-0 lead at half time, with a Paul Gallagher penalty then seemingly sealing the points for Alex Neil's side early in the second half, despite Juninho Bacuna's late strike for Huddersfield.

That result means that the Terriers now go into the November international break 19th in the Championship table, three points clear of the relegation zone.

With that hiatus now underway, there will be plenty for those of a Huddersfield persuasion to think about ahead of their return to action at home to Birmingham a week on Saturday.

Here, we take a look at three things we learnt about Huddersfield from that defeat to Preston.

They are not yet ready to compete at the very top of the division

Ahead of the game, you would have forgiven Huddersfield for being quietly confident about their trip to Deepdale, where Preston are unbeaten in the league this season.

Having gone seven games unbeaten ahead of the clash with Neil's side, culminating in a win over in-form Brentford the week before, it did seem as though the Terriers would be a dangerous proposition for Alex Neil's side.

As it was however, North End, buoyed an early opener, would control the vast majority of the game with relative ease, never really giving the Terriers a chance at goal until after the three points had been secured.

With that result securing Preston's place in the automatic promotion places after 16 games of the season, it seems as though, despite their recent upturn in form, Huddersfield still have some way to go until they can compete with those at the very top of this league.

They cannot always rely on Karlan Grant

If there is one man Huddersfield have consistently been able to turn to this season, it is Karlan Grant.

Even before that upturn in form for the team as a whole, the striker had enjoyed an impressive start to the season, racking up nine goals in the first third of the campaign.

Against Preston however, Grant was largely anonymous. struggling to get involved in the game and mustering just one shot in the course of the 90 minutes - which was off target from the edge of the area.

Having put in so much to such a challenging cause already this season, you can certainly allow Grant the off day he had at Deepdale, but the Terriers will need other members of their side to step up in games such as this more than they did on Saturday going forward, if they are to take anything from these situations in the future.

Danny Cowley will not let this slide

Despite the fact that this defeat came after seven games unbeaten, and was against a side unbeaten at home in the league this season and second in the table, Danny Cowley was still far from happy with his side's performance on Saturday.

Speaking in his post-match press conference on Saturday, the Huddersfield boss claimed this was one of the few games in his managerial career where his side was 'outfought', while also stating that they responded to an early injury to defender Tommy Elphick like 'victims'.

It seems therefore that Cowley will be pushing for a significant response from his players in the coming weeks, and the trip to Dubai the club have scheduled for the international break, may not be a particularly relaxing one for many members of his squad.
