Charlton Athletic ran out surprise winners against Leeds United at The Valley on Saturday afternoon.

The win meant that Leeds missed out on a chance to return to the top of the Championship table, after briefly being knocked off of top spot by West Brom who beat QPR in the early kick-off.

But the Addicks have started this year's campaign strongly, and could be the dark horses for a top-six finish in the Championship this term.

The only goal of the game came on 32 minutes, when Tom Lockyer's effort was forced over the line by summer singing Macauley Bonne.

Leeds dominated the game in terms of statistics, but some resilient defending from Lee Bowyer's side saw them come away with a hard-fought three points on the day.

It means that Charlton move up to sixth in the league table, and will be hoping they can build on this impressive result.

We look at THREE things we learnt about the Addicks after this win.

Bowyer's side shouldn't be underestimated this season

Not many would have thought that Charlton would be occupying a spot in the play-off positions after nearly a quarter of the season.

Lee Bowyer deserves a huge amount of credit, as the Addicks have shown that they can match any team in the Championship when they're at their best.

Leeds are one of the favourites to win promotion this season, but Charlton matched them throughout the contest, and Bowyer's side will be a real threat to the promotion-chasing teams as this year's campaign progresses.

The Charlton boss got his tactics spot on

It seems as though some teams have started to find Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds team out this season, as they are able to defend for the majority of the game, and still come away with a positive result.

Bowyer would have known that his side won't have dominated the game in terms of statistics, but the most important thing was that they made their chances count on the day.

They defended well, and were a real threat from set-pieces, which is something that Leeds struggled to deal with throughout the course of the match.

They can cope without Lyle Taylor

There will have been real concern coming into this one from Charlton supporters, with Lyle Taylor not included in the matchday squad as he looks to recover from injury.

Macauley Bonne led the line well for the Addicks though, and scored the all-important goal on the day to seal a hard-fought three points for his side.

His impressive showing won't have gone unnoticed, and it's good to see that Bowyer's side can cope without Taylor, who has started this year's campaign strongly in front of goal.
