Brentford earned a hard-fought point against Leeds United at Griffin Park last night, with the clash between the two promotion contenders ending in a 1-1 draw.

The Bees welcomed Leeds to West London knowing that a win would see them leapfrog the Whites and could see them move into the automatic promotion places.

But with Kalvin Phillips back in the line-up, Leeds looked back to their best and controlled the game for long-periods, restricting Brentford to scraps and breakaway chances.

In the 24th minute, however, a mistake from Kiko Casilla handed Thomas Frank's side the opening goal. The Spaniard slipped as he tried to collect a pass across his penalty area allowing Said Benrahma to race forward and tap the ball into an empty net.

This time, Leeds did not fall apart and they pulled level through captain Liam Cooper 13 minutes later, with David Raya's failed punch handing him an easy finish.

Both sides had chances after the break but neither were able to land the killer blow, ensuring the points were shared.

For the time being, Brentford are up to fourth and must now prepare for their trip to Birmingham City on the weekend.

Before the focus switches to that game, however, here are the three things we learnt about the Bees from last night's clash...

They need Pontus Jansson back

Brentford produced a strong defensive display last night and neither Ethan Pinnock nor Julian Jeanvier performed badly but without Jansson, this side does not seem to have the same control.

The Swedish centre-back is a big, physical presence in the defensive line and may have been able to provide the driving force from the back to help them be more dominant in the game.

Not only that, they struggled to deal with balls into the box against a Leeds side that have been poor in that area this season and conceded from a corner.

The sooner their captain returns, the better.

They're capable of digging in

This was far from Brentford's most dazzling performance of the season. Indeed, their BMW front three were relatively quiet but the Bees showed they're capable of digging in to earn a result.

As they often do, Leeds dominated possession and the hosts were forced to sit back and feed off scraps.

They were happy to do that, absorbing pressure and bursting forward when the opportunities arose.

A lesser side may have folded under the pressure but Frank's men showed their resolve to earn a point that could prove vital come the end of the season.

Question marks remain over Raya

The Spaniard's error was not as bad as Casilla's but it was just as costly.

In all, you'd say it has been a good first season for Raya, who arrived from Blackburn in the summer, but question marks remain over whether he is a top goalkeeper at this level.

With that in mind, the Bees may have to assess the possession if they can achieve promotion this season.
