Blackpool's have extended their winless run to five games with a 2-1 loss to Rotherham United at the New York Stadium yesterday.

The Tangerines headed into the game without a win since the 7th of December and made a poor start, with Michael Smith nodding Rotherham ahead from a corner in the 21st minute.

Armand Gnanduillet pulled Blackpool level 13 minutes later, popping up at the back post to convert Jordan Thompson's floated cross.

Simon Grayson's men had a number of chances to take the lead, with Daniel Iversen denying Matty Virtue and Gnanduillet.

However, it was Rotherham that struck next as Dan Barlarser found the top corner from a free kick in the 85th minute.

That result leaves Blackpool in tenth in League One but just two points adrift of the top six.

The Tangerines travel to face Reading in the FA Cup on Saturday but before the attention shifts to that game, here are three things we learnt about Blackpool from their defeat on Wednesday...

Keeping Armand Gnanduillet could be key to their season.

Gnanduillet popped up to find the net again, scoring his 12th League One goal of the season against Rotherham.

No other player in the Blackpool side has scored more than four goals in the league this season, so you feel the 27-year-old is likely to be key to their play-off aspirations.

Gnanduillet has been linked with a move to Derby County this season and ensuring that doesn't happen could be huge.

Mark Howard doesn't seem to be the answer between the sticks.

Howard struggled throughout the game against Rotherham, looking particularly shaky against high balls into the box.

The 33-year-old should have done much more to keep out Barlarser's late free-kick and the thought on him between the sticks moving forward will likely be worrying.

First-choice goalkeeper Jak Alnwick is reportedly facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines, so Blackpool may need to consider other options.

They may need a successful transfer window to ensure they qualify for the play-offs.

After a relatively strong start to the 2019/20 campaign, Blackpool have gone off the boil over the festive period.

You feel January could be an important month if the Tangerines are to secure a play-off place in May.

The League One side have already signed Sheffield Wednesday centre-back Jordan Thorniley but Grayson's squad could do with more improvements.

With Alnwick out for a significant period, adding a new goalkeeper would make sense, while Blackpool are also understood to be interested in Leeds United defender Lewie Coyle.
