Cauley Woodrow scored a 94th-minute equaliser to earn Barnsley a deserved point in a pulsating 2-2 draw with Derby County at Oakwell last night.

Aapo Halme put Barnsley ahead with his first goal for the club, heading in Alex Mowatt's free-kick in the 13th minute. Derby fought back to lead 2-1 at half-time thanks to a Chris Martin strike and a Tom Huddlestone penalty.

The hosts looked to be heading for a third straight defeat, before Woodrow struck deep into injury time, turning the ball in from close range to rescue a point.

Barnsley remain third from bottom in the Championship table and without a win since the opening day of the season, but there were certainly plenty of positives for head coach Daniel Stendel to take away form his side's display last night.

Here are three things we learnt about Barnsley after their 2-2 draw with Derby...

They have shown they have fight

If there's one thing that will have pleased Stendel the most, it's probably the character and belief that his side showed in the second half.

Barnsley only had themselves to blame for being 2-1 down at half-time, but they showed brilliant fight to come back and get the draw. They rode their luck a bit at times but they kept going right until the last and in the end, a point was the very least they deserved.

They showed fantastic character to keep going until the end - the kind of belief that teams who are involved in relegation battles need to show. We hadn't seen that from Barnsley this season, so that will be a very encouraging sign for Stendel.

Their defending has to improve

Barnsley showed great character to come from behind to get the draw, but there's still plenty of room for improvement defensively.

After a good start, Barnsley shot themselves in the foot twice in the first half and only had themselves to blame for going in behind at half-time, after two defensive mistakes in the space of nine minutes allowed Derby back into the game.

Some very hesitant and indecisive defending allowed Martin the time and space to fire home the equaliser.

The second goal was even more calamitous, as Mads Andersen inexplicably failed to clear the ball and then showed a complete lack of composure by bundling into the back of Tom Lawrence and giving away a penalty - which Huddleston converted.

There's no doubt that this sort of naive defending has to improve if Barnsley are to avoid an immediate return to League One this season.

Mallik Wilks could be a game-changer this season

Mallik Wilks came off the bench for Barnsley on 74 minutes and his introduction almost completely changed the game.

Some Barnsley fans questioned Stendel's decision to drop Wilks from the starting line-up for the defeat to Brentford at the weekend but he made quite an impact off the bench against Derby last night.

Barnsley played well throughout the second but they looked far more threatening with Wilks on the pitch. He provided the hosts with some extra energy and intensity going forward.

He could turn out to be a great signing for Barnsley this season and he's surly put himself in a great position to start the next game against Preston North End at the weekend.
