In Adam Murray’s first match as Barnsley's caretaker manager, the Reds drew 1-1 with high-flyers Swansea City.

Barnsley had the better of the chances in the first half, but couldn’t transfer their possession into goals. They were made to rue those missed opportunities as Steve Cooper's side took the lead midway through the second half through a header from Andre Ayew.

The hosts reacted immediately and Alex Mowatt scored to rescue a deserved point, although the Reds dropped to the bottom of the table, with just seven points after Stoke City beat Fulham on the same day.

We take a look at THREE things we learnt about the Tykes after their draw with the Swans.

They need a permanent manager ASAP

The Championship is a very tough and demanding league, made even harder if you are trying to pick up points without a permanent manager.

Under Daniel Stendel, Barnsley had a clear identity and philosophy. The German was a unique manager in terms of his tactics and playing style, therefore a new manager is likely to change a few things.

With Barnsley already dropping three points adrift of the relegation zone, the new manager will need to hit the ground running and win some points quickly.

Although Barnsley played well on Saturday and picked up a good point, they need to appoint a manager soon and settle down for what will be a long, tough season.

Barnsley have a good platform to build from

Although Barnsley sit bottom of the league, and without a permanent manager, it’s not all doom and gloom at Oakwell.

There’s a lot of points to play for still, and they have some good players that a squad can be built around. Cameron McGeehan and Alex Mowatt in particular, are two, young and talented midfielders who can impact any game.

It should be an exciting time for Barnsley. Cauley Woodrow and Conor Chaplin are forming a good partnership, and still in their early 20’s.

A new manager with good coaching credentials could build this Barnsley side into a force in the Championship.

Barnsley didn't disgrace themselves by any means against Swansea, and matched their opponents on the day for much of the game.

It was an encouraging display that they need to build on as the season progresses.

Experience is needed in January

Barnsley have a young, exciting squad at the moment, but they need to find a couple of experienced players to help the younger members of the squad's development, which could help the Tykes earn vital points.

For example, Wigan signed Charlie Mulgrew earlier this year and have gone on to keep four clean sheets at home in a row. He has made an instant impact for all of the right reasons.

The Championship is a division where your mistakes get punished, and the Tykes look as though they could certainly do with some much-needed experience in their side at the earliest of opportunities.
