Goals from Will Grigg, Donervon Daniels and Craig Davies gave Wigan Athletic their first victory of the season, as Scunthorpe United were put to the sword 3-0 at the DW Stadium.

Wigan comfortably defeated Scunthorpe

Here's three things we learned from last night's match in League One...

1. Wigan are up for this

It was just three seasons ago that Wigan were in the Premier League and crowned FA Cup winners.

However, two relegations in the last three years have sent them on a downward spiral that they were seriously looking to break free of.

One point from their opening two games left morale low, but last night's performance will have breathed life back into the Latics.

With respect to Scunthorpe, they will probably face tougher encounters along the way, but the confidence looked to have reappeared and the players seemed to be enjoying themselves again.

More of the same will be needed regularly over the course of the season if they are to mount a serious promotion charge.

2. Wigan can win at home

Since the start of last season, Wigan had managed to record just a single victory at the DW prior to last night's game.

However, at the third time of asking this campaign, they managed to do it and in emphatic style too.

They dominated Scunthorpe from the outset and you could hear the fans respond to the urgency that their side were showing.

Making the DW a fortress will be a factor that should stand them in good stead for an instant return to the Championship.

3. Scunthorpe must buy defenders

Granted Grigg and Davies were inspired during last night's game, but the Wigan forwards found it far too easy.

The Scunthorpe defence was breached after barely three minutes when Jack King brought down Grigg in the penalty area and it went downhill from there really.

They looked very nervous against the threat of Davies, who enjoyed a very successful night as he had them in his back pocket for most of the evening.

You build success starting at the back and if the Iron are to launch a genuine promotion threat this season, then Mark Robins must do so.
