In the last minute, Craig Morgan’s header helped the Latics prevent Gillingham from going top of League One with a 3-2 victory.
The Gills took the lead inside half an hour when Bradley Dack played a clever ball over the top for Reading loanee Dominic Samuel to run on to, and the striker squeezed the ball past former Bolton and West Ham keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen to make it 1-0.
Rory Donnelly doubled the Gills’ advantage with 53 minutes on the clock when he nodded home a precise header.
But an excellent three minute spell saw the Latics pull back onto level terms, with first Will Grigg powering home an unstoppable shot, before Max Power’s shot evaded the Gills keeper and slipped into the back of the net.
After a few late scares, Craig Morgan rose highest top thump home an unstoppable header in the 6th minute of injury time.
Here are THREE things we learned from this eventful encounter…….
1) Bradley Dack is the class of the division – With media headlines pointing to a possible departure to greener pastures, most likely Reading FC of the Championship, Bradley Dack showed his class by putting in an excellent performance, the type that Gills fans have came to expect from their young playmaker this season.
His man of the match award epitomised his performance.
2) Wigan are looking up – This win takes the Latics up to fifth in the table, and Wigan fans will be hoping this is the start of a rich vein of form which might just see them make an instant return to the a Championship.
The ability to come from behind showed a real sense of spirit and togetherness among the player as well.
3) Dominic Samuel is pivotal for the Gills – His loan spell from Reading so far has been an undoubted success, and has even lead to consideration from manager Brian McDermott of a first team spot.
His loan was extended until the end of January, to allow him to return to Reading, should a replacement for Nick Blackman not be found in time.
Gills fans will be hoping this is not the case.
