Walsall moved in to the top two positions in League One with a 2-1 win over Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday night.

Two goals in five minutes from Sam Mantom and Andy Taylor but the Saddlers firmly in the driving seat, and a late goal from Liam Mandeville for Rovers was not enough claw anything from the game.

Doncaster will be annoyed to have lost another home game, but Sean O'Driscoll will be delighted as he guided his Walsall side to victory upon his return to his old club.

It means now that the Saddlers sit second in the League One table, two points ahead of third placed Gillingham and still with a game in hand.

They managed to keep hold of star men Tom Bradshaw and Romaine Sawyers throughout the transfer window, and look a real good bet to win promotion to the Championship.

Here, I take a look at THREE things we learned from last night's game at the Keepmoat......

1) Walsall are contenders

Winning away in South Yorkshire on a cold Tuesday night showed Walsall have the fight, not to mention the quality, to go on and at least claim one of the top two automatic spots on offer this season.

They looked anxious in the first half, something touched upon by manager Sean O'Driscoll, but came out in the second half with renewed confidence and vigour to snatch a two goal lead which they never looked back on.

If they can continue in this vein of form, then they will no doubt be right up there come the season end.

2) Doncaster in danger?

Last night's loss means Rovers are now only eight points above the drop zone.

With it only taking a run of wins for clubs to gain ground on the clubs in and around them, Doncaster will be looking over their shoulder as they look to keep themselves well clear of the relegation zone.

Consistency will be key, something they have struggled for this season, and manager Darren Ferguson may look to the loan window to bring in some much needed faces.

3) Goals from other sources win promotion

While all the focus would have been on Bradshaw for Walsall, and Williams for Doncaster, it was two other faces who grabbed the goals for the Saddlers.

Midfielder Mantom and full back Taylor both scored last night, and this is a key factor in any team wanting to win promotion.

While Bradshaw might grab the headlines and will more than likely hit the 20 goal mark come the season's end, manager Sean O'Driscoll will be keen for his other players to be adding to their tallies to take the load off his star man.
