The Shrews were 2-1 down with only five minutes remaining after Lewis McGugan had scored two stunning goals for the Owls to put them firmly in the driving seat.

However, Simon Whalley pounced on a missed penalty rebound to make it 2-2 then, in the seventh minute of stoppage time, Jack Grimmer rose to head home for a famous comeback victory.

It was a spirited and quite brilliant display from Shrewsbury, and although the Owls made plenty of changes to the first 11 which has seen them break into the play-off positions in the Sky Bet Championship, there can be nothing taken away from the performance of the League One outfit.

FootballLeagueWorld writer Lee Connor identifies three things that we learned from the dramatic game yesterday...

1) The magic of the cup is very much alive!

Shrewsbury have been struggling in League One this season, hovering above the relegation zone for the most part.

However, they have pulled off numerous big results over the season, and can now add the scalp of Sheffield Wednesday to it.

It could serve as a real confidence boost to the Shrews as they look to maintain their League One status going forward. The way it was won, the last minute winner, and the performance overall are all positives manager Micky Mellon will be looking to take forward in to their league form.

2) How does Lewis McGugan not get a game?

The former Watford and Nottingham Forest midfielder scored two truly wonderful goals to put the Owls in front twice, and he will be wondering what he has to do to get a starting place in the Carlos Carvalhal's league team.

McGugan would surely walk into most teams in the division, and certainly every team in the league below, so it will be interesting how it pans out for him as the season progresses.

It is also however a testament to Wednesday and the squad depth that they have.

Although they ultimately lost the game, the eleven on show were all good players, with McGugan proving to be the cream of the crop.

3) Focus on the league

For both clubs, the league must be a priority.

Shrewsbury are in and around the relegation places, while Sheffield Wednesday have a realistic chance of promotion for the first time since the turn of the millennium and their last relegation from the top-flight.

While Shrewsbury will be hoping to take the positives forward, the Owls will be looking to put the result behind them and get back to basics in the league by putting points on the board.

A fifth round tie though will generate some much needed income for the Shrews, and it may prove vital as we approach the final day of the transfer window with fresh faces potentially able to be added.
