Sheffield Wednesday ended Birmingham City's good run with a 2-1 victory at St Andrews on a cold and wet afternoon in the Midlands yesterday.

The Blues led at half time thanks to Clayton Donaldson's strike just before the half time whistle, before Wednesday rallied in the second half through two quick goals from Gary Hooper.

The Owls saw out the rest of the game to secure a crucial win over their play-off rivals, and move back into the top six with a two point cushion now to seventh place Ipswich Town.

It was another massive win for the Owls as they look to secure a return to the Premier League under Carlos Carvalhal, and put pay to any sort of concerns surrounding competing against teams in and around them at the top.

Gary Rowett's Birmingham meanwhile suffered a set back, but remain within three points of a play off place and will not have given up hope of securing a top six spot come May.

FootballLeagueWorld writer Lee Connor identifies three things that we learned from yesterday's game at St Andrews...

1) The Owls have the spirit to match the quality

We all know they have spent money and brought in top quality players for Championship football during the summer and winter transfer windows.

However, yesterday showed they are willing to put the work in to grind out the results.

At 1-0 down and losing goalkeeper Kieran Westwood to what looked like a serious head injury, they rallied and got back in front before grinding out the win in the remaining minutes.

This is a key quality in any promotion winning side, and Owls fans can rightly be excited for what the rest of the season can hold.

2) Promotion race down to the wire?

The win for the Owls yesterday moved them into the top six and within six points of the automatic promotion places.

There is no reason that Wednesday cannot challenge the top two on their current form.

Where the play-offs are concerned, this too remains tight. Cardiff City down in ninth are only five points off a top six place, while Birmingham and Ipswich remain in contention.

Nottingham Forest down in tenth are in the middle of a good run and they too are only eight points off.

Anything can happen as we know in football, and all those clubs will fancy themselves with a shot of promotion.

3) Is Hooper the signing of the season?

Hooper smashed in two goals in two minutes to effectively win the game for the Owls.

He made his loan move from Norwich City permanent in January, and it appears to be a masterstroke from manager Carvalhal.

Hooper already has nine goals for the Owls since he made his initial loan move towards the end of 2015, and is demonstrating the quality which made the blue half of Sheffield pay the reported £3 million fee for him.

There is no denying it that, in Hooper, the Owls have a top class striker to compliment an already talented squad.

Promotion will not be to far away if Hooper can maintain this level of consistency.
