A late Jake Cooper header helped Reading to a 1-1 draw with an in-form Sheffield Wednesday side at the Madejski Stadium, and jumped a single place up to 13th in the Sky Bet Championship table.

Sheffield Wednesday meanwhile stay in sixth place, above seventh place Birmingham City on goal difference, but still two points off of fifth place Burnley.

After Barry Bannan hit the post early on, Gary Hooper scored after securing a permanent move following a successful loan spell.

Reading's Matej Vydra won a penalty soon after, but failed to finish from the spot, instead hitting the post. Reading pressed for an equaliser in the second half, and Cooper scored his first goal of the season when he fired home an excellent header to equalise.

Debutant Yann Kermorgant had a decent chance late on, but he nodded wide of the mark. It was a decent point regardless for the Royals, but the Owls will see this draw as a missed opportunity.

FootballLeagueWorld writer Harry Smith identifies three things that we learned from yesterday's encounter...

1) Yann Kermorgant looks like a solid capture

Despite missing an important late chance, and spurning a free kick well wide inside scoring range, fans will have been impressed with the impact the giant Frenchman made on the game, and will be excited about the impact he could have.

His qualities could be excellently suited to a partnership with Vydra, and should that partnership be given time to blossom, it could be a very potent one for the Royals in the second half of the season.

2) Gary Hooper, similarly, looks like a coup

The former Norwich City striker found regular game time hard to come by at Carrow Road, but his loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday brought the best out of Hooper.

Unsurprisingly, this has prompted the Owls to sign him on a permanent deal and, if he keeps on scoring, promotion could be a real possibility this season for Carlos Carvalhal's side.

3) Reading need to keep their concentration

The first 25 minutes were yet again extremely disappointing for the Royals and, like in the Huddersfield game when they went 2-0 down early on, they gave themselves a lot to do against a good Sheffield Wednesday side.

Continue to do this and they will find that they will not be so lucky as to find a way back, and that could put an end to their already faint play-off hopes.
