Promotion chasing Middlesbrough couldn't find a way past Bartosz Bialkowski in the Ipswich goal as they failed to pull away from third-placed Brighton.

Boro dominated the match and had a number of golden chances to open the scoring through Albert Adomah, Jordan Rhodes or Emilio Nsue.

Aitor Karanka's men had more opportunities to win the game in the second half with a Jordan Rhodes spinning effort hitting the post and a David Nugent header being hit straight into the goalkeepers arms.

Ipswich failed to really trouble Dimi Konstantopolous in the Boro goal, the only real work he had to do was the palm away a David McGoldrick cross which would've given Liam Feeney the perfect opportunity to snatch all three points.

The result leaves Boro in second, with only goal difference separating them from leaders Burnley and third-placed Brighton as all three teams have 87 points.

Mick McCarthy's men knew that their chances of reaching the play-offs for a second year in a row was unlikely going into the game, but the draw means that they now cannot catch Sheffield Wednesday, who occupy the final spot in the top six.

Here are THREE things we learned from the game:

1) The promotion race will go down the final day

Boro's failure to win the game means that the race for promotion will go down to the final games and, as it happens, the Teessiders host Brighton at the Riverside.

A win on Saturday would have meant that Aitor Karanka's side could potentially have secured promotion next Friday when they face Birmingham City, but it now means that at least one of the automatic promotion places will be up for grabs on May 7th.

Its certainly going to be an exciting end to the season and the game between Boro and the Seagulls will be just as important as the play-off final.

2) A stern Ipswich defence appeared for the first time in a while

While Mick McCarthy's side did require a little bit of luck to come away from the Riverside with a point, a lot of Boro's failure to break them down as their stern defence.

The Boro attackers often found no space in the centre of the pitch and were forced out wide as a result, something which hampered their creativity, particularly when Cristhian Stuani came on as he prefers to move centrally.

If the Tractor Boys' defence showed this sort of sternness earlier in the season, then they may have found themselves closer to those elusive top six positions.

3) Boro lacking in the final third

Not for the first time this season, Middlesbrough couldn't find a way past a team that was solid and invited the pressure.

Jordan Rhodes can count himself unlucky not to have found the back of the net when his shot hit the post and bounced into the hands of Bialkowski but fans will have left the Riverside wondering how their team did take all three points.

Aitor Karanka made two changes to inspire his side, David Nugent and Stuani coming on for Gaston Ramirez and Stewart Downing, but these changes seem to take the momentum away from Boro's attack.
