Leeds United came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw after a stunning strike from Marco Matias gave Sheffield Wednesday a half-time lead.

Leeds played out a 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday in the Yorkshire derby at Elland Road

Chris Wood's 61st-minute tap-in was enough to earn Leeds a share of the points, but a dominant yet wasteful performance will leave their fans disappointed it was not more.

The draw maintains Leeds' unbeaten but winless start to the season and saw the Owls make it five points from four games, after a solid start under new manager Carlos Carvalhal.

Here are three things we learned from today's Yorkshire derby:

1. Sam Byram is not a winger

Some promising attacking displays down the right hand side towards the end of last season from the 21-year old were enough to convince Leeds manager Uwe Rosler that Sam Byram could be the man to provide some much needed width in attack this season.

Few would dispute that the youngster displays the pace and technical ability to cut it in such a position, and a good performance in that right wing position against Burnley went some way to justifying Rosler's decision.

However, a less than impressive performance today may have thrown up some doubts. Byram looked a little lost further forward and struggled to get into the game - giving away possession and clearly trying to resist the urge to drop into his favoured deeper role.

He said before the game that he still considers himself a right-back and despite his commitment to play wherever he can help the team, it is becoming clear that his manager should consider him in that position too.

Byram was at his most dangerous on the overlap last season and despite a solid start from Gaetano Berardi at right-back this season, replacing him with Byram might make that right hand side more threatening for Leeds.

Add this to the fact that Stuart Dallas created Leeds equaliser from the right wing position and the argument to drop him back becomes stronger.

2. Marco Matias could be a great signing

The former Portugal under-21 international's 37th-minute volley had Sky Sports drawing comparisons with Tony Yeboah's legendary strike at Elland Road

Although Matias's goal might not have been quite as breath-taking, the technique involved was sublime and is certainly an early contender for goal of the season.

The summer signing has introduced himself brilliantly to the Championship and Sheffield Wednesday fans, who will hope to see many similar strikes over the coming season.

Owls manager Carlos Carvalhal was understandably very pleased with the 26-year-old after the game.

“Marco is a player who has come into the Championship and he was a big influence in our team today," he told the Guardian.

"He will be an even better player in the future because he was very tired when he came off with 15 minutes left and we have played a lot of games in a very short time.

“Marco’s goal was very special. He showed excellent technique. He wasn’t so good against Reading in midweek but he made up for that today.”

3. Leeds missed a creative spark in midfield

Until the 61st minute when Dallas danced past his marker with a cheeky nutmeg and set up a simple tap-in for Chris Wood, Leeds were not looking very threatening.

They had plenty of possession but no cutting edge and constant long balls from centre-back Liam Cooper highlighted a definite lack of creativity in midfield.

Despite a good performance against Bristol City in midweek, Kalvin Phillips looked nervy in possession and a very early booking did little to calm him down.

Tom Adeyemi shielded Leeds' defence well (ableit against a lacklustre Wednesday strike force) but only enlarged the gap between defence and attack.

The introduction of Luke Murphy and Alex Mowatt on the hour mark changed the game, with the latter instrumental in the build-up to the equaliser.

Leeds' passing improved drastically after the substitutions as they pushed for a winner, and both players will be pushing for a place in the starting line-up in Leeds' next game against Derby County.
