Hull's hopes of rescuing their recent poor form were dealt a blow when they required a stoppage time equaliser from Adama Diomande to win a point against Huddersfield.

The Terriers opened the scoring in the 40th minute when winger Jamie Paterson found a way past Tigers goalkeeper Allan McGregor, a goal that gave his side the lead going into half-time.

Hull's top goal scorer Abel Hernandez equalised for the promotion hopefuls, before defender Harry Maguire headed into his own net in the final minute of normal time.

Steve Bruce's side were rescued by Norwegian striker Diomande, leaving his side nine points behind second-placed Middlesbrough but seven ahead of seventh-placed Cardiff City.

Here are THREE things we learned from the game:

1) Hull's poor defensive display

Much of Hull's recent poor form has to go down to their defending, which has been significantly worse than it was at the beginning of the season.

Centre-backs Michael Dawson, Alex Bruce and Harry Maguire were often guilty of ball-watching and their failure to deal with Huddersfield's attacking threat is what has cost them another three points.

It is very unlike a Steve Bruce side to be so sloppy at the back, but this has been a regular feature in the Tigers' team for some time now.

2) David Wagner needs to work on consistency

Huddersfield have, at times, looked a much better team under new Head Coach David Wagner than they have under previous managers, but he will need to work on his side's consistency in matches if they are to be successful.

Wagner will feel his side should left the John Smiths Stadium with three points but his side have been poor defensively this season, which has cost them a lot of points.

The club have already begun preparations for the next season and the Head Coach will definitely be looking to improve his side's consistency next season.

3) Hull need to improve to win promotion

The Hull City team we're watching now is completely unrecognisable from the side that was chasing the title at the beginning and in the middle of the season.

Some of the teams that look like they will be playing in the play-offs, particularly Derby, are bang in form at the minute and momentum is going to be key as the race to join the top two in the Premier League reaches its climax.

Steve Bruce knows how to win promotion and he will know that his side must improve to reach the promised land.
