3 things we learned from Derby County’s 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town

Derby County remained in fifth position in the Sky Bet Championship thanks to a 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town yesterday.

The win for Darren Wassall’s side means that the promotion hopefuls are still in contention of a return to the Premier League as the promotion chase heats up.

Alternatively, Huddersfield Town still remain in an ounce of trouble at the wrong end of the league standings. Wins for Rotherham United, MK Dons and Charlton Athletic mean that the gap between the Terriers and the relegation zone is just seven points.

FootballLeagueWorld writer Reece Chambers identifies THREE things that we learned from Derby’s win at the iPro…

1) The Rams are returning to form

With three wins in the last four, Derby look to be returning to some sort of form that could see them become a front runner in the promotion push.

A loss last week away to Wolves interrupted a run of two victories, however their comfortable win seems to be a sign that Derby are looking to regain their promotion-worthy form.

Goals from Chris Martin and Johnny Russell, scored on either side of half-time, meant Derby could cruise to victory.

As a result, Derby must be taken as serious promotion candidates if their recent form is anything to go by.

2) Huddersfield are not safe yet

Charlton, MK Dons and Rotherham all winning yesterday means that Huddersfield drop to 18th in the table, seven points clear of the relegation zone.

However, with just four wins this year, Huddersfield will not be expecting an easy end to the season as they look to be entering a potential relegation battle. Manager David Wagner will be keen to see his team to return to winning ways when they take on Reading next Tuesday at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Despite slight worries around the squad, their performance at the iPro Stadium against Derby was reason to be hopeful of a safe finish.

The visitors had 15 shots during the game, four of which were on target. Huddersfield also had 54% of the possession and dominated the game for large parts of the game.

Nevertheless, Wagner will want his men to be able to convert their dominance into goals as their season seems to be drawing to a nervous end.

But, Huddersfield fans, there are plenty of games still left to play and perhaps worrying about a relegation battle is not necessary just yet.

3) Taking chances matter

Although Huddersfield played very well yesterday and bossed the game on many occasions, the gulf between the top teams and the bottom teams in the league is obvious.

Both sides had four shots on target in the match, but most crucially, Derby managed to convert their chances.

This brings up the common question – does financial backing matter?

Well, from this evidence, it does. Derby invested heavily into their squad in the summer and that seems to be paying off here.

Martin and Russell scored to show how clinical you need to be to compete at the top end of the Sky Bet Championship.

Derby and Huddersfield fans… what did you make of the game yesterday? Is it a game Huddersfield should not have lost? Can Derby achieve a top six finish? Let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
