3 things we learned from Charlton’s 3-1 win against Sheffield Wednesday

Carlos Carvalhal’s Sheffield Wednesday were stopped in their tracks by a determined Charlton Athletic side, who recovered from their woeful form with a convincing 3-1 win at the Valley.

Johnnie Jackson put the Addicks in front with a powerful header and Simon Makienok doubled their advantage with a calm side-footed finish on the brink of half time.

Iranian striker Reza Ghoochannejhad made it three to seal the game in the 55th minute, before Fernando Forestieri grabbed a late consolation, but the Owls’ momentum has been stunted by this shock win.

Here are three things we learned from yesterday’s contest:

1) Johann Berg Gudmundsson is the spark

The Icelandic wide midfielder was heavily involved in the first two goals, providing the cross from the corner, from which Jackson nodded home the opener.

He clearly provides the creative spark the side lacks elsewhere, and also has a deadly long-range strike on him as well as good passing ability.

He could be the key for Charlton as they look to drag themselves away from the bottom three.

2) The Owls aren’t invincible

The Sheffield side have been on a great run of form and may feel disappointed that they didn’t end Brighton’s unbeaten run in midweek.

Yet they were brought down a peg by a plucky Charlton side yesterday.

Manager Carvalhal will have to ensure his side don’t let complacency get the better of them should they conjure up another winning run.

3) Wednesday have goals outside Lucas Joao

Prior to the game, Wednesday looked slightly reliant on Lucas Joao to provide the goals up top, but Fernando Forrestieri is looking a bigger threat game by game.

The goals are still continuing to flow despite the loss, and they’ll look to get back to winning ways after the international break.

Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday fans… what did you make of the game? How good were Charlton? How poor were the Owls? Let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
