Charlton Athletic put in a battling performance to earn a point against play-off chasers Cardiff City as both sides could not be separated in a 0-0 draw.

This was certainly not a dull affair as both sides were unable to a breakthrough in a game that was high on chances, but low in quality.

Cardiff were the better side overall - they had four efforts cannon off the woodwork that caused severe tension within the Charlton back four.

However, Charlton managed to hold firm and made a late bid for victory with Zakarya Bergdich forcing David Marshall into a routine save, before Simon Makienok almost won it when Bruno Ecuele Manga cleared off his own line.

Sammy Ameobi was shown a second yellow card in stoppage time for the visitors but it mattered little in a stalemate that did little for either side's aspirations.

Russell Slade's Bluebirds remain in ninth place in the Championship but are falling away from the chasing play-off pack, as they now find themselves five points adrift of Derby County in sixth place.

Charlton lifted themselves off the bottom of the table, but will need to pick several wins in their final 15 games if they are to stand any chance of sustaining their Championship status.

FootballLeagueWorld writer Ashley Williams identifies THREE things that we learned from yesterday's game…

1) Cardiff’s poor end product

The Bluebirds have a squad capable to challenge for the top six, but has lacked a goal-scoring striker this season that has seen them fail to break down struggling sides.

They did up the pace in the second half but they lack a poacher in the squad.

The Bluebirds showed their attacking intentions throughout the game but I believe they will miss out on a play-off place as Tom Lawrence is not an out-an-out striker that can score 15 plus goals for them.

Anthony Pilkington battled today, hitting the bar and going close on a number of occasions, but again, he is no striker.

For all of their qualities, he and Lawrence don't get in behind the defence often enough.

Cardiff are a Jordan Rhodes or an Andre Gray away from being very competitive in this division.

2) The tail of two owners

It was a battle of the sides' controversial owners.

Earlier in the week, Vincent Tan promised to halve Cardiff's £140 million debt, while Charlton fans were handing out numerous Pinocchio masks and stickers before kick-off in the protest at Addicks owner Roland Duchatelet, who has made a series of promises that have been broken.

Tan was present at the game today and has been interfering with the prep talks at the club over the past few days, encouraging the players to shoot when possible.

These are two clubs in need of a lift, but Cardiff will be relieved their position is far stronger than Charlton's.

3) Point not good enough for Charlton

Manager Jose Riga would have been pleased with his side’s performance at the Valley, but the Addicks are still in a deep amount of trouble and a point will not change their situation at the moment.

They have lifted themselves off the bottom of the table, but Bristol City’s positive run of form has left them needing Charlton to step up their game and start picking up maximum points more often.

They are six points adrift of the Robins, but they will hope that they can build on their performance and turn them into wins.

Charlton will continue with their efforts to survive in the league, and they will be looking to frustrate London rivals Fulham when they come face-to-face on Tuesday night.
