It was a game that promised much after the exciting game these two had when they last met and it duly delivered.

Cardiff City had to come from behind to gain a point from their match against Rotherham United in a match that very much mirrored the game between the two back in September.

In that match at the New York Stadium there was an own goal and a sending off and on Saturday's game at the Cardiff City Stadium there was exactly the same.

Anthony Pilkington put Cardiff one up before Joe Newell rounded Bluebirds 'keeper David Marshall and finished from a tight angle.

Pilkington then put Rotherham ahead in unfortunate fashion; scoring past Marshall from a Rotherham corner.

The Republic of Ireland international then atoned for his own goal by latching onto a poor touch in the Rotherham area and finishing past 'keeper Lee Camp.

In an open game, the final ten minutes turned out to be frantic as Cardiff's Lee Peltier was sent off after picking up his second yellow. However, neither team could make the breakthrough and the game ended at 2-2.

Here are three things we learned from Cardiff City's frantic draw with Rotherham:

1) Anthony Pilkington's performance

If not for Anthony Pilkington, Cardiff may have struggled in their match against the Millers. The attacking midfielder had five shots and was the Bluebirds' main attacking threat with striker Joe Mason having a tough time against Rotherham's defence.

Pilkington seemed to find a lot of space in his role and showed composure and tenacity in the penalty area as he finished off the far post for his first and then pounced on a poor touch in the Rotherham area for his second.

Despite scoring an own goal past his own 'keeper David Marshall, Pilkington proved to be key in City's attack and without him they would have struggled.

2) Rotherham's ever improving defence

Defensive ability is far too often based on goals conceded and while that is the case some of the time, in the Millers' case it is not. Kirk Broadfoot has been a stalwart player in the side since his return to the starting line-up and he shows no sign of falling out of contention as he has put in a number of impressive performances.

Not only that, but Tunisian international Aymen Belaid is beginning to find his feet at Rotherham and put in a really good shift before being substituted due to an injury.

Before the game, Rotherham were again questioned on their ability to hold a lead or hold onto a point. Saturday's draw against Cardiff showed that the Millers defence can put in a real shift and fight for results.

Full-backs Shay Facey and Joe Mattock are also improving and while Rotherham are still conceding and losing more than they are winning; it is encouraging to see Redfearn's men being able to hold onto results like they did at Cardiff.

3) Missed opportunities for Cardiff City

After an impressive win against a strong Wolves outfit, Russell Slade's side were favourites to defeat Rotherham at home.

The Bluebirds are now unbeaten in ten at home after their draw with the Millers but Slade will be far from happy that his team could not close the gap on the top six.

City missed the chance to go within three points of Sheffield Wednesday in sixth and while they did well to come from behind to draw; this game will be seen as a missed opportunity against a side that are 21st in the division.
