Blackburn meet another League Two side in Oxford United in the fourth round after they battled through a fierce match with Newport, which saw both side reduced to ten men.

Rovers went ahead through Ben Marshall in the eighth minute from the penalty spot, moments later Chris Brown was dismissed for bringing down Newport midfielder Elito.

The Welsh side made their superior numbers count an equalised after the half hour mark, Byrne scoring a neatly struck shot from outside the area.

At half time, Blackburn manager brought on Jordan Rhodes, and it paid dividends as he was inspirational and Rovers dominated the second half - he got his goal fifteen minutes from time with a fine header.

Blackburn held on to the win despite having seven minutes added time, which saw home keeper sent off for a professional foul just outside the area in 95th minute.

Here are THREE things we learned from last night's Blackburn's 2-1 win over League Two Newport County......

1) Jordan Rhodes is vital to Blackburn

Rhodes came on at half time with Blackburn down to ten men, and not really playing that well.

The striker came on and dominated the back line of Newport County - yes they are a League Two side, but he was outstanding in very difficult circumstances.

He posed a threat in the air that had been lacking in the first half, and pressed from the front, created and brought others into play.

Keeping hold of Rhodes in this window will be critical to how Blackburn's season goes.

2) Warren Feeney is on the right track at Newport

Warren Feeney took control of his second match yesterday and all the signs are good for The Exiles, they played decent football (in the first half) and had a competitive edge to the side.

Tactically he got it spot on, as he frustrated a team from two divisions above them.

If Newport can continue in this way for the rest of 2016, they will be in League Two next season.

3) Mark Byrne is key to Newport's survival

For the first 45 minutes he was running the show for Newport County, and barked out orders to his team mates and scored a very good goal.

Although Newport lost their way in the FA Cup tie during the second half, there were a lot of positives to be taken from the match for the League two side.

If Byrne carries on playing like this for the remainder of this season, Newport should stay in the Football League.
