Swansea City climbed to the top of the Championship last night following a 2-1 victory over Charlton which ended their run of three games without a win.

Jonathan Leko had given Charlton an early advantage at The Valley but Yan Dhanda and Andre Ayew then both struck either side of half-time to ensure the three points went Swansea's way.

The win was much-needed for Steve Cooper's side who were the Championship's early pace-setters heading into the last international break, but they had since lost to Nottingham Forest and drawn against Bristol City and Reading prior to last night.

The victory over Charlton was made even more impressive by the fact Lee Bowyer's men had secured an impressive 1-0 success over Leeds in their previous outing which means Swansea had their work cut out heading into Wednesday night.

So, how did Cooper's side fare during their important win?

Here are three things we learned about the Swans in the midweek clash...

Joe Rodon and Mike van der Hoorn are continuing to solidify their partnership

The two centre-backs first formed their defensive pairing at the start of last season under the leadership of Graham Potter, but Wednesday night's victory was evidence of how much this partnership has developed.

Rodon delivered a stand-out performance at the heart of defence with his ability to win challenges and also bring the ball forward, while van der Hoorn's sturdy presence alongside the Welshman complements his game nicely.

The duo now have an excellent understanding of each other's game having worked together for a significant period now, which is allowing them to build a solid base for Swansea to express themselves further forward.

Ayew's goal articulated the togetherness of Swansea's squad

The Ghanaian had previously not scored a league goal for the Swans since his strike against Manchester City in May 2016, but he picked an excellent name to get his name on the score sheet as he completed the turnaround at The Valley.

Ayew has been playing regularly for Swansea this season but he has not managed to score since his brace against Northampton in the Carabao Cup, and his eventual strike against Charlton demonstrated the strong spirit that exists in the squad.

The winger raced across to the Swansea bench after he tucked the ball home to hug Cooper, with this showing his gratitude to the Swans boss for re-integrating him into the squad despite being linked with a move away over the summer.

The relationship between Ayew and Cooper will continue to be important as the season develops because Ayew can become a lethal player in the Championship if his manager utilises him correctly.

Dhanda offered further proof of Swansea's new-found strength in depth

Cooper made one change to his side from the Reading clash as Dhanda replaced George Byers in an attacking midfield role, with the former Liverpool man starting his third league game of the campaign.

The 20-year-old was starved of opportunities during his debut season at the club last term but Cooper has placed more trust in the midfielder, and he repaid this faith by levelling the scores inside the first half.

He also delivered a solid overall display in his forward role by showcasing his impressive technical ability with a number of neat touches and passes.

The fact he has not been a regular during Swansea's strong start to the season is evidence of the depth in quality Cooper has at his disposal particularly with the likes of Nathan Dyer, Kristoffer Peterson, Wayne Routledge and Jordan Garrick waiting to be called upon.
