Portsmouth were held to a 2-2 draw at Bristol Rovers in League One this weekend, as Kenny Jackett’s Pompey continue to struggle in League One.

Pompey remain 16th in League One after a 2-2 draw at Bristol Rovers at the weekend.

Gareth Evans gave Kenny Jackett’s side the lead from the penalty spot on nine minutes, and Ronan Curtis doubled their lead with twenty minutes of the second-half remaining.

It looked as though Portsmouth were heading towards a routine victory, and a much needed one for the under-fire Jackett, but Rovers managed to score twice in the final fifteen-minutes to take a point.

Alex Rodman scored the first for Bristol from inside the box, before Pompey keeper Craig MacGillivray fumbled the ball past his own line in injury time to put Rovers back on level terms in the most dramatic fashion.

It was a desperate blow for Jackett’s side, and here we take a look at three things we’ve learned about Pompey after the weekend:

Inconsistency is their downfall

Probably the story of their season so far.

Portsmouth have been so inconsistent in their opening 13 games of the League One campaign, and that was the theme against Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

At 2-0 up, Portsmouth looked like the side of last season. They’d dominated Bristol and overall, were probably deserved of the win.

But two defensive mishaps were their downfall on the day, and once again they were undone by their inconsistency and inability to see out football matches.

Vulnerable to set-plays

As they were in their 1-0 defeat to AFC Wimbledon earlier this month, Portsmouth were undone by set-pieces twice on Saturday.

One from a corner and one from a wide free-kick, Portsmouth’s inability to defend set-plays has been their biggest weakness this season.

It’s simple defending and will be something that’ll infuriate Jackett - this is something that his side need to work on the training ground if they’re to muster any results in the coming weeks.

Dangerous from the flanks

Although Pompey fans would’ve left the Bristol game with plenty to gripe, they were for the best part of the game, the better side.

Going 2-0 up, they looked like a side capable of winning promotion from League One.

Their second goal came from a cross from the flank, which was the method of most of their attacks on Saturday.

Jackett’s side have been blessed with some top-class wide players like Curtis and Ryan Williams, and they should look to utilise these two to try and push themselves up the table.

Pompey are a side under-performing massively this season and Jackett is a man under growing pressure - his side need to produce the goods soon or he'll face the sack sooner rather than later.
