Luton Town picked up a crucial victory last night at Kenilworth Road as they ran out 3-2 winners over Derby County, with goals from Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu, Donervon Daniels and an unfortunate Jayden Bogle diversion into his own net proving to be the difference between the two sides.

The result sees the Hatters close the gap on Charlton Athletic in 21st place to six points as Graeme Jones seeks to lead his side out of the relegation zone over the course of the next few months.

It had been something of a quiet contest up to just after the hour mark when Derby's Wayne Rooney curled home his first goal for the club in the 63rd minute to give the Rams the lead, before Luton equalised soon after through Mpanzu's well struck half volley.

Before Daniels found the net with a well taken header to put Luton ahead for the first time on the night, however Chris Martin was then on hand 12 minutes later to level the scores, finishing well from Bogle's cross.

The game was then settled in bizarre circumstances when Bogle managed to turn the ball into his own net, thus handing the Hatters all three points as Max Lowe received his marching orders soon after.

Here, we take a look at THREE things we learned about Luton after their last gasp win over Derby County....

Defensive frailties ongoing

The Hatters once again showed that they are still lacking the defensive solidity required to maintain their Championship status last night.

Both of Derby's goals came from deliveries out wide, with the Bedfordshire based side displaying poor organisation when looking to prevent said crosses into and around the penalty area.

Both goals could have been easily prevented if Dan Potts had been quicker to close down the opposition attacker out wide.

This is certainly a weakness that will continue to be exploited if Jones doesn't put some work into preventing this from happening again in his side's upcoming games.

Mpanzu makes a difference

The Luton midfielder was in good form last night as he marked a swashbuckling performance with a well taken goal to level the scores on the night.

Mpanzu has seemingly adapted well to playing at Championship level, with the former West Ham United man having been with the Kenilworth Road outfit since their days in Leagues One and Two.

His all action display proved to be the difference as the Hatters seeked to nullify the threat posed by the likes of Rooney and Duane Holmes.

With three goals to his name this term, Mapanzu will be hoping to continue his form in front of goal as the Hatters seek to achieve their objective of Championship safety.

The home side showed great resolve to fight back and take the game by the scruff of the neck in a match up that was viewed by many as a must win game.

It is a result that will certainly help to reduce some of the concerted pressure on the shoulders of Jones who will now be hoping to see his side really kick on after a tough run of games.

Just days remain in the current transfer window, leaving the Luton boss with little time to make improvements to his existing squad.

The addition of Peter Kioso from Hartlepool United represents Luton's only foray into the January market at present.
