Luton Town succumbed to their 7th Championship defeat of the season at Fulham last night, with an Aleksandar Mitrovic hat-trick sealing a 3-2 win for the Cottagers.

Graeme Jones’ Luton pulled off the shock of the weekend in the Championship when they thumped Bristol City 3-0 at Kenilworth Road on Saturday.

That was a good performance from the league’s new boys, but they were brought back down to earth on a tough night in Fulham.

Mitrovic stole the headlines with his first-ever hat-trick in English Football, but Luton didn't make it easy for them and left the Cottage having scored twice in the game.

Dan Potts headed home their opening goal to make the score 2-1 on the hour-mark, and Kazenga LuaLua added a consolation goal in injury time of the second-half.

Jones’ side did themselves justice last night, as they have done throughout the Championship season so far.

Here we take a look at three things we learned about Luton last night:

Sloppy in possession

For Mitrovic and Fulham’s first goal last night, Luton were caught in possession in their own half, and Fulham capitalised to take the lead.

It’s not the first time that Luton have been caught napping at the back, and the first goal after 15 minutes of the game last night set the game in Fulham’s favour.

These kind of mistakes are simply avoided but extremely costly when made. Luton were perhaps too comfortable with the ball at the back last night and paid for it early on.

Too weak down the middle

The bulk of Fulham’s attacks last night came straight through the heart of Luton’s defence.

It was far too easy for the home side to run at Luton and get the ball up to Mitrovic, who had a poacher’s field day scoring all three of his goals from inside the box last night.

Jones’ side need to toughen up their spine before it’s too late. They arguably faced the league’s best attack in Fulham last night, but they’ve more formidable foes to face in the campaign yet.

Dangerous on the counter

For all the criticism that could be thrown Luton’s way last night, in the end, they only lost by the odd goal at a team chasing promotion to the Premier League.

They held their own, and showed again how effective they can be on the back-foot.

LuaLua’s goal came from a quick break from the Hatters and showed the quality they have on the counter - Harry Cornick’s goal against Bristol on Saturday was another example of it.

This will be an important trait of Luton's as the season goes on, and it'll fare them well when they face the league’s other big hitters in the fixtures to come.
