Fleetwood Town let a one-goal lead slip as they were held to a 1-1 draw against Sunderland.

A late equaliser from Max Power denied Joey Barton's side the opportunity to move into the play-off places in League One.

An early effort from Barrie McKay set Fleetwood on their way early in the first half, but while Chris Maguire and Lyden Gooch had efforts before the break it was Fleetwood who held the lead at the break.

Sunderland huffed and puffed in the second period and got their reward with the last kick of the game as Max Power curled home an effort in the 96th minute.

Here's three things we learned about Joey Barton's side at the Stadium Of Light.

Barrie McKay

He may have got Fleetwood Town's only goal, but the forward did a lot more than simply open the scoring.

The 25-year-old was a constant threat and used his pace and trickery to force Sunderland into a number of errors - particularly early on.

McKay ran the home side ragged before being taken off in the second half, and he played a big role in what was so nearly a memorable victory.

A solid defence

Fleetwood Town were hugely impressive at the Stadium Of Light, but it wasn't their attacking players who stole the show.

On the contrary, it was a sound defensive display which caught the eye.

Joey Barton's side handled everything that Sunderland threw at them over the course of 90 minutes, and in fairness to them, they were unfortunate to be stung at the end.

Playing the occasion to near perfection

Jeoy Barton's gameplan was almost played to perfection at the Stadium Of Light.

An early goal, a strong and robust defence and plenty of football's 'dark arts', Fleetwood came so close to frustrating the home fans by stopping them from finding their flow.

If they had secured the three points it would have been deserved, but coming away with a point is nothing to sniff at either.
