Bristol Rovers played out an enthralling game with Shrewsbury at the weekend, the Pirates managing to come away 4-3 winners in a game which threw up many twists.

Tony Craig headed in from a Liam Sercombe corner, before Ollie Clarke was in the right place at the right time to deflect in a shot from Mark Little.

Josh Laurent then pulled one back for Shrewsbury as he turned in Aaron Pierre's cross.

Sercombe then increased the Rovers lead when he netted from long-range, before Ollie Norburn curled in a free-kick for Shrewsbury and Laurent headed in from close range to equalise.

However, central midfielder Abu Ogogo slotted in during the last minute to take all the three points back to Bristol.

Here, we take a look at three things we learnt about Bristol Rovers from their win over Shrewsbury...

Rovers can be deadly from set pieces

Bristol Rovers aren't exactly known for their prowess from dead ball situations, however they proved that they can mix it up in the box when Craig headed in Sercombe's corner, before other centre-back Alfie Kilgour had one disallowed from a similar situation.

If Rovers can keep up their ability to net from set pieces, then they will have another way to threaten teams inside the area.

Sercombe is important to how Rovers should be playing

Having signed for Rovers in the summer of 2017 from Oxford United, the central midfielder has proven that he can mix it with the best midfielders in League One, again being a threat through the middle.

Two assists and a goal to his name was the sign of a man who is back to his best, as he was allowed a free roam in the midfield to try and create as much as possible for Graham Coughlan's men, and the 29-year-old obliged with an excellent performance.

The Pirates don't always have to rely on Clarke-Harris

With Jonson Clarke-Harris ruled out of Saturday's game with an injury, there were many fears within the Bristol Rovers fanbase that they would struggle in front of goal without their top scorer.

However, one goal from a centre-back and three goals from the midfield trio that started the game proved differently as the four goals for Rovers all came from different goalscorers.

If the other players can continue to step up to score goals and take the burden off of Clarke-Harris when he returns, then Coughlan's men could still be on for a good season.
