Bristol City achieved a dramatic win over Charlton Athletic with a 2-1 win over the Addicks at Ashton Gate after coming from behind in front of their own supporters.

In a tame first half, both sides failed to register any chances of note, however the second half came alive following Lee Johnson's tactical switch.

Macauley Bonne was played in behind and as Dan Bentley committed, Bonne just got there first and rolled the ball past Bentley and into the empty net.

Famara Diedhiou equalised with a glancing header from a Josh Brownhill cross, before Diedhiou was shown a straight red for a kick out at Jason Pearce.

Captain Brownhill then popped up with the winner 98 minutes into the tie when he controlled and volleyed in Kasey Palmer's pass over the top.

Here, we take a look at three things we learned about Bristol City in their win over Charlton...

Han-Noah Massengo needs a rest

Central midfielder Massengo needs a rest after the countless minutes of football he's played.

Massengo has played more senior football than he has done already at the age of 18, and it looked to have caught up with him over Charlton.

The French midfielder looked leggy and off it as he attempted to go about his usual business, but he struggled as the midfield pivot and was hooked after 69 minutes in favour of Kasey Palmer.

Palmer deserves a start

Bristol City were struggling to break down Charlton up until the point where Palmer stepped into the fray with 20 minutes to go.

The attacking midfielder drove his team forward from the focal point of the 4-4-2 diamond where he operated at the tip just off Diedhiou and Rodri.

Palmer's pace and dribbling got City high up the pitch as Charlton began to back off, and the midfielder's exquisite pass over the top to Josh Brownhill led to the match-winner.

Rodri has potential

When he stepped onto the pitch at Ashton Gate for the first time, fans were looking forward to seeing their Spanish striker play for the first time in home surroundings.

And the 29-year-old didn't disappoint as he played up front alongside Famara Diedhiou after coming on in the 54th minute, the slight in stature Rodri looking surprisingly strong when holding the ball up and then being able to bring his team-mates into play.

The former Sheffield Wednesday striker was also aggressive as he wore his heart on his sleeve, and he took up good attacking positions.

Rodri is definitely somebody for City to look forward to.
