3 things we definitely learnt about Luton Town after their 1-0 defeat v Huddersfield Town

Luton Town‘s excellent 2021/22 season came to an end on Monday evening when they were edged out by Huddersfield Town 1-0 on the night and 2-1 on aggregate.

The Hatters had a glorious opportunity to get ahead in the tie through Harry Cornick in the first half, but the 27-year-old almost got too strong a contact on Kal Naismith’s cross and Lee Nicholls stood firm as the strike rebounded back off of his chest.

Luton were many people’s dark horses this season in the Championship, but that should not take away from the achievement of finishing in the top six compared to their budget in the division.

Here, we have taken a look at three things we definitely learnt about Luton after their 1-0 defeat against the Terriers…

Fine margins

It all came down to a set piece.

There was only one goal from open play in the tie, and it was something of a counter-attack from the Terriers to take the lead through Danel Sinani at Kenilworth Road, demonstrating how evenly matched this semi final was.

The Hatters were probably the better team on the night and if Cornick scores, their destiny could have been very different.

The tie as a whole only reiterated just how strong Luton are, and how close they are to making the leap to the Premier League.

They are ready

This was not a flash in the pan.

With the stability at the club on and off the pitch, and the direction they are heading in with recruitment, the Hatters will not do a Barnsley next season.

Nathan Jones remains very committed to the club and will be even hungrier to improve next season, the progress has been steady and mightily impressive in the last decade at Luton, and there is no reason why that will not continue next term.

Depth chart needs bolstering

It was quite upsetting to see Elijah Adebayo play under four minutes in the whole tie after the season he has had, with Jones throwing him on out of desperation in the 90th minute.

Cameron Jerome and Danny Hylton have proved very valuable squad members this season and will have contributed a lot in the dressing room and on the training ground, but in terms of where Luton want to get to, as backup options for Cornick and Adebayo, they are below par in chasing promotion.

This position in the squad will likely be addressed in the summer window.
