West Brom were certainly busy in the transfer market as they look to be the only relegated club to bounce back to the Premier League at first attempt.

Stoke City seem well adrift of the promotion race and Swansea are seemingly building for the future, meaning Darren Moore's Baggies are the sole club in the top six who played in the top flight last season.

They've been strong going forward this campaign, but losing Harvey Barnes during the transfer window was a big blow. That hasn't deterred them from the task in hand though and they had a busy deadline day, bringing in three new faces.

With just three months of the current season left to play, the Baggies will now be hoping to press home their intentions and, fired by the new arrivals, break back into the top flight.

Is that likely? Or has their transfer window business told us something else about them? FLW look at three things we learned about West Brom in the January window.

Replacing Barnes was key

It seems obvious to say so, but they had to replace Harvey Barnes adequately. They moved to bring in Jacob Murphy on loan and he seems to be the player to pick up where the Leicester man left off.

He'll have to bring creativity and guile, but flair and an unpredictable edge too. It's a big ask, but he's talented enough to be that player.

There's still confusion over systems

They drafted in Jefferson Montero, a winger, but farmed out Oliver Burke because he didn't fit their system. Why will one winger work and another will not?

Then there's the retention of Tyrone Mears and Wes Hoolahan. Those players have struggled to impact the side, so why waste wage budget on keeping them around?

There's still a confusing element to the Baggies' approach.

They needed a certain type of experience in the middle

Chris Brunt and Gareth Barry are experienced in terms of age, but the Baggies needed a Championship ready player in there, one with success in his recent past but the benefit of younger legs as well.

Stefan Johansen is a superb capture for them and it is an area they needed to bring someone in. Hopefully, he can tie the exciting forwards to the stuttering defence and help make them look a more cohesive unit.
