Darren Moore’s West Brom side were surprisingly beaten 3-2 by an out-of-form Middlesbrough side at the weekend.

The Baggies came into the game as favourites against Tony Pulis’ men and they would have been hoping to keep the pressure on the top two in the Championship with a positive result, but they were left to rue missed chances.

George Saville gave Boro an unlikely lead on the day, but goals either side of half time from Jay Rodriguez and Dwight Gayle saw West Brom leading with just 15 minutes remaining.

But they completely threw away this lead, and a Britt Assombalonga brace meant that Moore’s side went home empty handed which will come as a huge blow to their automatic promotion ambitions this season.

The result means that West Brom are seven points adrift of top spot heading into this weekend’s set of fixtures.

But what have we learnt about the Baggies after this disappointing defeat?

Find out below….

This is a real wake-up call for Darren Moore and his squad

Darren Moore's side were one of the pre-season promotion favourites, and were well on course to achieve that before their game against Middlesbrough.

But this defeat should come as a real wake-up call to Moore and his team, and should be used as motivation for the remainder of the season.

If the Baggies are to have any chance of returning to the Premier League, they need to be beating their promotion rivals.

Gayle and Rodriguez's goals are crucial this season

The lethal strike partnership has 30 goals between them this season and they are the main outlet for goals in this West Brom.

Both Gayle and Rodriguez added to their tally with a goal a piece n the defeat to Boro at the weekend.

Darren Moore will need to have the duo fit for the rest of this year's campaign, otherwise they could easily drop out of promotion contention as the season progresses.

Rekeem Harper is an exciting prospect

Harper was a standout performer for West Brom at the weekend, despite the frustrating defeat at The Hawthorns.

He is out of contract at the end of the season and the club will need to act swiftly to secure his long-term future with Darren Moore's side.

Harper has a bright future ahead of him and could prove to be a real talent in future seasons.
