Tranmere Rovers' first season back in the EFL came to a head on Saturday afternoon as they took on Newport County in the League Two Play-off final at Wembley.

After a year proving the gap between the National League and the fourth tier of English football never has to be that big, this was there chance to win another play-off final - after the one they had the season before.

In their way, a Newport County side that had gatecrashed the play-off party right at the end of the season - ending the regular campaign in great form and on a fine unbeaten run.

A tight contest in prospect, then, and a tight contest in reality as the game went into extra time after a 0-0 result after 90 minutes.

Connor Jennings, though, stopped it from going to spot-kicks with a last gasp header to fire them into League One.

Here, then, are three things we learned about Tranmere from the match against the Exiles...

James Norwood is set for League One

The best striker in League Two, his performance for much of the game suggested he'd be on the way up even if Tranmere weren't.

They're going, though, and that might well have boosted their chances of keeping him put at the club for next season.

Work to do v wing-backs

For much of the first-half in particular, Newport's wing-back system had Tranmere in real trouble.

They were pinned back and Norwood was isolated as the wide-men could not get forward.

Something that improved in the second-half, it'll be a lesson for Micky Mellon to take a lot from.

Connor Jennings deserves more praise for his efforts this season

Connor Jennings works harder than most and got what he deserved for a season of industry and big goals.

Whilst James Norwood has rightly taken the spotlight this season, this was Jennings' time to shine and that he did with a late header.

He deserves great credit for the role he has played this year.
