Sunderland earned a 1-1 draw away at Charlton at the weekend as they took part in one of the few League One games to actually go ahead.

The Black Cats have had a good season so far and are in contention for promotion - though they'd like to be a bit closer to the top two than they currently are.

Even so, it makes a change for them to be competitive in games and they were certainly that against Charlton - particularly in the first half.

Luke O'Nien put the Black Cats ahead but they would be pegged back as Reece James spooned into his own net at the start of the second period.

1-1 it would finish, then, and Jack Ross will be eager to try and learn from that one as we head towards the business end of the campaign.

Here, meanwhile, is what we learned from the draw.

They need to kill games off better.

Sunderland were the dominant side in the first half and could, and perhaps should, have been out of sight.

Instead, though, they scored just the once and were eventually hanging on in the second half.Luke O'Nien is excelling at the club right now.

He's become a real fan favourite and his goal against the Addicks was utterly superb.

He's a player of considerable talent and is now showing that.

They've got plenty of fight in them.

Of course, many will feel that the game should have been won by half-time but in the end they were probably happy enough with a point.

Charlton threw the kitchen sink at them in the second half and they largely stood up to it.
