Sunderland gave themselves a slender advantage to take to Fratton Park in their play-off semi-final, winning 1-0 this weekend.

Chris Maguire's goal gave them the lead, bringing them only their second home win since mid-March. They're hunting an immediate return to the Championship, but finished fifth in the League One table.

They're about to embark on their fifth tie with Portsmouth this season, but only their second visit to Fratton Park. Their last trip there wasn't one that will be recalled fondly, they lost 3-1 and had Glenn Loovens sent off just before Christmas.

Thanks to Alim Ozturk also being dismissed this weekend, it's a weakened Sunderland side expected to make the long journey down south. They're also likely to be without Aiden McGeady, who was ruled out ahead of kick off despite being picked for the game.

That's where we start our look at three things we learnt from their victory this weekend.

Aiden McGeady Gamble Didn't Pay Off

McGeady broke his foot against Accrington and played through the pain barrier in the final few weeks.

The intention was to secure an automatic promotion spot, instead they're in the play-offs and McGeady is now injured.

That's a huge gamble that hasn't reaped the rewards they'd hoped for.

Chris Maguire Could Prove Pivotal

Maguire turned in some great performances earlier in the season, but he's been overshadowed by some of the bigger signings in recent weeks. His injury didn't help and he was in danger of being the forgotten man.

That's behind him now, his introduction from the bench changed the game and his goal has given his side the advantage.

It was a great way to underline his importance.

Inconsistency Is Still An Issue

The key players just can't get into a rhythm and that could be a big problem going into the second leg. Lewis Morgan disappointed this week, despite looking lively at the end of the season.

Lynden Gooch turned in a decent display, but he's been poor recently. As for Will Grigg; the less said the better.

If all their stars performed to the best of their ability every week, they'd be on the beach now looking forward to a trip to Middlesbrough next year.
