Stoke City slumped to a 3-1 defeat at Charlton on Saturday afternoon as the Potters made it two losses from two at the start of this Sky Bet Championship season.

After going 1-0 down thanks to a fantastic Lyle Taylor goal for the home side, the Potters did actually rally and Tom Ince had them going in level with a fine effort of his own.

Indeed, after the break the Potters started the brighter and played some nice football but they could not get that all-important second goal, and it was Charlton in the end who would go on to win the game.

In truth, the Addicks probably edged things over the full match but the Potters did have their moments, and Nathan Jones will be looking at those and how to better build on them in coming games.

Here, then, are three things we learned about the Potters after their defeat...

Clinical finishing needed

Both Lee Gregory and Scott Hogan had chances in this one and they did look bright together, but both could only find the woodwork.

Indeed, Gregory missed a chance he will feel he should have scored at the start of the second half too. Had that gone in, we might have been looking at a different result altogether.

Midfield options are there

Stoke had the likes of Ryan Woods, Joe Allen and Sam Clucas in midfield for this one.

All three are good on the ball and all three have got ideas to unlock defences - there were times where the Potters controlled this game.

They do, however, need to find a way to make real clear cut chances so Stoke can use such periods to greater effect.

No need for panic yet

Some Potters fans might have begun to wonder about Nathan Jones about this one but it's not time to panic just yet.

They hit the woodwork more than once and Gregory had a great chance to put them in front. This wasn't a poor performance, just the finer details of the game when in Charlton's favour.

The question for Jones is, can he keep belief in the players and fans as to what he is looking to do for long enough? The next few weeks are certainly important.
