Sheffield Wednesday don’t look like they’re missing former boss Steve Bruce at all this season.

The Owls have got off to a flying start, winning two from two and clambering to the top of the Championship table.

Under caretaker manager Lee Bullen, Wednesday followed up their 3-1 opening weekend victory against Reading with a 2-0 win over Yorkshire rivals Barnsley in their first home game of the season on Saturday.

Deadline day signing Jacob Murphy opened the scoring less than two minutes into his debut and Steven Fletcher doubled the lead in the second half.

Here, we look at THREE things we learnt about the Owls from their performance on Saturday…

They have some real depth in goal

In the absence of Keiren Westwood, who was sent off against Reading last week, Cameron Dawson was excellent between the sticks for Wednesday.

Dawson made a number of key saves and marshaled his defence in a calm and composed manner.

His close-quarters save from Cauley Woodrow’s shot right at the end of the first half was excellent and meant his side kept their 1-0 lead and their momentum heading into the break.

Such was the quality of the shot-stopper's day that he was named in the EFL Team of the Week.

Westwood will likely return to the starting line up next week but Dawson has shown the strength in depth the Owls have in goal.

Their new wingers provide a real threat going forward

Two new arrivals, Murphy and Kadeem Harris, looked excellent against Barnsley and made the club’s summer business look extremely shrewd.

The debutant Murphy found the net in just the second minute and set the tempo for the Owls performance, while Harris picked up from where he left off against Reading and looked dangerous throughout, scooping the man of the match award.

Bullen praised the duo after the game for troubling the Barnsley defence throughout the game–if they can keep that level of performance up they’ll likely be troubling other Championship defences this season.

Bullen has shown he has tactical nous

Wednesday’s victory over Barnsley was built on the success of the high pressing game they played.

Bullen revealed after the game that it was a game plan he had devised after watching Barnsley beat Fulham last week, and it is one that worked out perfectly for his side.

The caretaker manager has to take credit for that, which should improve his chances of getting the job on a full-time basis.
