Sheffield Wednesday kept their faint play-off hopes alive in Steve Bruce’s first game in charge of the Owls.

Bruce’s side ran out narrow 1-0 winners over relegation-threatened Ipswich Town at Portman Road, and they’ve got one man to thank for the all-important three points.

Lucas Joao stepped off the bench to net an injury-time winner to spark jubilant scenes in the away end on the day.

The result sees the Owls move up to 16th in the Championship table, and Bruce will be hoping they can build on back-to-back league wins.

They are also only nine points adrift of the top six, so he’ll be hoping his side can keep the momentum going and mount a late charge for the play-off places.

But what did we learn about Sheffield Wednesday after this latest win?

Find out below….

Are the play-offs a slight possibility?

The Owls might be 16th in the Championship table, but are only nine points adrift of the play-off positions which will be exciting for Sheffield Wednesday supporters.

It can only take a run of wins for a team to fire themselves into play-off contention, and with Steve Bruce in charge of the team now, you can't rule out a late charge for the top six.

Joao needs to be given a chance to lead the line

Joao netted the late winner for the Owls over the Ipswich, and certainly made an impact, after coming on as a 75th minute substitute.

He has nine goals to his name in the league now, but Steven Fletcher is currently the first-choice striker with Sheffield Wednesday, despite only having five goals to his name.

Joao is surely deserving of a start for Bruce's side in the near future.

Michael Hector is crucial to the success of the Owls team

Hector has been out of the side for a number of weeks, but made return to the starting XI in the win over Ipswich at the weekend.

He can play a crucial role for Steve Bruce's side going forward for the remainder of the season and on his day, is one of the best defenders in the Championship.
