Reading wrapped up their pre-season preparations with a 4-3 defeat to Frank Lampard's Chelsea team on Sunday afternoon.

The Royals took a shock lead on the day with Josh Barrett expertly lobbing Willy Caballero in the Chelsea goal, but that lead didn't last long as Ross Barkley fired home a well-placed free-kick.

Kenedy then saw his deflected strike from distance give Lampard's side the lead heading into the break, which was far from deserved.

A host of changes from both sides didn't make much difference from the amount of goals in the game, as new Royals signing, Michael Morrison equalised from a Charlie Adam corner early into the second-half.

But a quick-fire brace from Chelsea youngster, Mason Mount gave the Blues some breathing space heading into the final stages of the game.

Reading made it a nervy finish for the Premier League side though, as Sam Baldock scored from close-range, after Michael Olise sent the forward clear.

Chelsea held on for the win though, and Reading will now turn their attentions to their season opener against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.

But what THREE things have we learnt about Jose Gomes' side after the narrow defeat?

Find out below....

Josh Barrett has given Gomes a real selection dilemma

Reading have a good amount of depth in wide areas heading into the new season, and Mo Barrow and Yakou Meite will have been the main contenders to start the game next weekend against Sheffield Wednesday.

But Josh Barrett has certainly given Jose Gomes a welcome selection dilemma heading into the opening day of the season, as he put in an impressive display against Chelsea.

Barrett opened the scoring with a fantastic lob from close-range, and he'll be hoping he can be handed a chance to prove himself in competitive games for the Royals in this year's league campaign.

Michael Olise is one of the brightest talents at Reading right now

A lot of the talk from Reading supporters has been about Danny Loader, but Michael Olise is quickly becoming an exiting talent at the Madejski Stadium.

His trickery on the ball was there for all to see, as he embarrassed David Luiz and Kurt Zouma with an excellent run, before having his effort saved by Caballero in the Chelsea goal.

He didn't look out of place at all, and if he can build on this performance, then he's going to be a key player for Jose Gomes' side this season.

The Royals matched Chelsea for much of the game

Many would have predicted that Reading would struggle to match Chelsea on the day, especially with Gomes fielding a relatively young team for the second-half.

But they surprised many by putting up a real fight against the Blues, and on another day, they could have even come away from the game with a win.

If Gomes' side can build on this positive showing, then they'll certainly fancy their chances of beating Sheffield Wednesday in their first game of the season.
