Kenny Jackett's Portsmouth registered a hard-fought 3-2 win this weekend to keep themselves involved in the automatic promotion hunt for another week.

They're now capable of catching Barnsley, having a game in hand and being just two points behind. There's the same gap between them and Sunderland, although the Black Cats have a game in hand themselves.

It's a great return to form by Pompey, who seem to have used their Wembley appearance to motivate the side.

Prior to beating Bury in the EFL Trophy semi-final, they'd failed to win in eight League One matches. Since securing their trip to the home of the English game, they've won five in six.

This weekend saw them in a real battle, as you always are away at Wycombe. Gareth Ainsworth's side are renowned for being physically demanding and aggressive, but Pompey came through it with flying colours.

Here's three things we learnt about them following their 3-2 victory at Adams Park.

They're still in the automatic hunt

Coupled with Barnsley's defeat at Burton Albion, this result gave Pompey real hope of going up automatically. They still have Sunderland to play and it's very much in their hands as to whether they go up or not.

After failing to win in eight matches, that's a real turnaround.

Brett Pitman has a major role to play

Rightly or wrongly, Brett Pitman has struggled for games this season.

His brace was the difference between victory or defeat yesterday and despite his patchy season, he's still been a huge influence.

Kenny Jackett might have brought him back into the fold at just the right time.

They've hit form at the right time

Even if they don't make the top two, they've come into a great run of form at just the right time.

The play-offs are often won by the team in the best form, not who have been best over the whole season.

That's got to be encouraging for Pompey.
