It was a frustrating night for Portsmouth on Tuesday, as they were held to a goalless draw by Sheffield Wednesday at Fratton Park.

Despite a number of chances, Pompey found themselves up against a 'keeper in inspired form in the shape of Owls' shotstopper Bailey Peacock-Farrell, who made some excellent saves to keep the home side at bay.

Indeed, even after Wednesday midfielder Massimo Luongo was shown a straight red card for a late lunge on Pompey attacker Ronan Curtis with 20 minutes to go, the hosts were unable to find a breakthrough.

As a result, Portsmouth remain ninth in the League One table, three points adrift of the play-off places, leaving manager Danny Cowley with plenty to think about after that match.

So with that in mind, we've taken a look at three things we learned about Portsmouth from that stalemate with Sheffield Wednesday, right here.

A promising response

It was a tough weekend in FA Cup action for Portsmouth, as they suffered a late defeat to League Two Harrogate at Fratton Park.

With that somewhat unexpected loss coming despite the presence of a number of first-team regulars in the starting XI, there is likely to have been some pressure on the club to produce a response to that here.

Although that did not come in the form of a win against the Owls, it was certainly not for the want of trying, with Pompey going close to breaking the deadlock on a number of occasions.

Given it was a determined performance to the end against a Wednesday you would also expect to be in the promotion mix, there should now be a confidence that that Cup upset can be put to bed quickly at Fratton Park.

Defensive solidity continues

Following that stalemate with Sheffield Wednesday, Portsmouth are now unbeaten in their last eight outings in League One.

Tuesday's draw with the Owls was also the fifth time during that run that Pompey have kept a clean sheet, with Cowley's side only conceding four goals in total across those matches - two of which were in a 2-2 draw with Accrington Stanley at the very start of that run.

As a result, it appears Portsmouth are now starting to develop a solid defensive foundation from which they can build on in the league, making them tough opposition for sides to break down.

If they can maintain that through the rest of the season, you feel they have a good chance of having a significant say in the battle for a place in the Championship this season.

Ronan Curtis will get his goalscoring record eventually

One Portsmouth player who seemed to endure a particularly frustrating evening on Tuesday, was Ronan Curtis.

Having again been unable to get on the scoresheet, Curtis remains level with Yakubu on 43 goals for the club, meaning he still needs one more to become the club's outright top scorer this century, though he has now failed to score in his last nine appearances for the club.

However, that arguably had more to do with Peacock-Farrell than Curits, with the Owls 'keeper producing a stunning save in either half to deny the Portsmouth attacker, tipping a curling effort beyond the post before reacting brilliantly to keep out a close range header.

Curtis is unlikely to come up against a goalkeeper in that sort of form in every game, so if he keeps playing like that, his record breaking 44th Portsmouth is surely on the way.
