Millwall secured consecutive Championship victories for the first time this season by comfortably beating Luton Town 2-0 at The Den on Tuesday.

It's been an excellent response from Gary Rowett's men following their defeat at Swansea City prior to the international break, who climbed to fourth in the table.

The Lions had to be patient against the Hatters, but after squandering a number of first-half opportunities, finally took the lead in the fourth-minute of stoppage-time after Matt Smith's header deflected in off Luton's Martin Cranie.

Millwall finally made the points safe 11 minutes from time when Ryan Leonard battled well before finding Connor Mahoney, who drove towards goal and then fired a wonderful effort into the bottom right-hand corner, clipping the post on the way through.

Victory against Barnsley on Saturday would complete a perfect week for the Lions and keep them in touch with the chasing pack.

We take a look at three things we clearly learnt about Millwall after their 2-0 victory at The Den....

Can you name the club these 15 Millwall players started their career at?

Connor Mahoney makes his mark

It's been difficult a time for Mahoney since making the seven-figure move from Bournemouth last summer.

The winger scored just three times in 40 Millwall appearances last season and struggled to convince Gary Rowett that he's good enough to be a regular starter.

However, this season appears different. Mahoney was bright at Wycombe on Saturday, but took his performance up a level against the Hatters to produce one of his finest displays in a Lions shirt.

He worked hard, got his delivery spot on and had a massive hand in both goals. Firstly, Mahoney sent over the corner for the opener before showing extreme confidence levels to double Millwall's lead with a fine long-range effort.

It's only one game, so there's little need to get carried away, but this could prove a major step in the right direction for the 23-year-old.

Have Millwall finally changed?

Far too often in recent seasons, Millwall have come unstuck in games they're expected to win. Barnsley and Middlesbrough were the standouts last term, whilst the likes of Wigan, Burton and Rotherham are further examples.

However, things might just be changing. Having defeated Wycombe on Saturday and then Luton three days later, Millwall are showing signs that they're a tougher nut to crack under Rowett.

But Barnsley, a side the Lions have traditionally struggled against in recent years, feels like the biggest test of them all and three more points at The Den on Saturday will have the Lions growing in confidence.

Matt Smith shows his importance

It's rocket science to know Smith can't offer the same energy levels or work-rate as Troy Parrott, Tom Bradshaw or even Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, but when the big centre-forward is on the pitch, Millwall always look more dangerous.

Smith had been starved of minutes prior to Saturday, but has started the Lions' previous two Championship matches and made telling contributions in both.

Against Wycombe, he won the penalty before assisting Leonard's winner and then played a key role in Cranie's own goal here.

The only disappointment from Smith's point of view is that he's somehow still waiting for his first league goal of the campaign having struck the woodwork three times across the two games - including a sitter from six-yards against Luton.

Smith might not be everyone's cup of tea, but he deserves to be starting at present.
