Luton Town can practically taste Championship football, after picking up yet another invaluable win in their hunt for automatic promotion.

The Hatters faced a trip to an out of sorts Bristol Rovers side who were fighting towards the bottom end of the League One table, in what is shaping up to be a fascinating relegation dog-fight.

Mick Harford’s men were fancying their chances of picking up yet another three points having gone 26 games unbeaten, and got off to the perfect start when in-form striker James Collins got on the scoresheet after 17 minutes.

Luke Berry then doubled Luton’s lead before Jonson Clarke-Harris pulled one back for the hosts on the stroke of half-time.

But the league leaders held to pick up another three points on the road, matching a club record of going 27 league games unbeaten. Here, we take a look at three things we learnt about Luton after their 2-1 win at the Memorial Stadium.

They can win dirty and grind out a result

A lot is said about Luton's free-flowing, attacking football, but Saturday afternoon proved that the Hatters can put their backs against the wall and grind out a result.

They had to cope with large spells of pressure from Rovers in the second half, but defended magnificently well and rarely looked like losing.

This is testament to their character and unity within the squad.

They will be lucky to keep James Collins next season

Another weekend, another goal for Collins.

Many would have doubted his ability to score goals in the league having failed to make the step-up from League Two in previous years.

But the forward has certainly silenced those doubters, taking his tally up to 21 goals for the campaign.

Luton will be lucky to keep hold of him next year.

They are now surely champions elect

Luton now sit seven points clear at the top of League One after Barnsley were held to a draw at the weekend, and the title is now surely theirs.

If they can dominate play-off chasing teams like Doncaster at home and thrash them 4-0, then pick up a professional 2-1 win away from home, it shows that they just can't stop winning games.

They are bound to be champions this season.
