Marcelo Bielsa will have been delighted with Leeds United’s performance against Swansea City last night, with the Whites looking something like their best.

Leeds entered the clash on a difficult run of form, having won just two of their last seven fixtures and picking up only a single point from clashes with Norwich City and Middlesbrough.

However, there was an arrogance about Leeds’ performance last night, with goals from Pontus Jansson and Jack Harrison in the first-half putting Bielsa’s side in a commanding position.

A late Oli McBurnie penalty had Elland Road on edge, but Leeds were worth their three points at the full-time whistle and the performance was a show of Bielsa’s side back to something like their best.

Here at FLW, we dissect Leeds’ 18th win of the Championship season, identifying THREE things we learnt about Bielsa’s side…

Kalvin Phillips is key

We know this anyway, but Phillips’ performance last night only underlined the facts.

Back in his defensive midfield role, Phillips bossed the game and didn’t let Swansea into the game for over 80 minutes.

With Phillips in this kind of form, Leeds look a different side.

The fans are backing Luke Ayling

It’s been a tough couple of weeks for Ayling, who was the subject of harsh criticism across social media following the draw with Middlesbrough.

However, Elland Road rallied behind their right-back last night, with his name sung from the terrace.

He responded with an improved performance, minus a needless penalty he gave away.

Barry Douglas faces an uphill battle retaining his place

Douglas is one of the best left-backs in the league, but in his absence, Ezgjan Alioski has excelled.

There was another assist for the Macedonian last night and he’s making the left-back position his own.

When Douglas returns from injury, he might have to settle for a place on the bench, with Alioski in outstanding form.
