Gillingham were lucky to come away from Fratton Park with a point at the weekend, as Portsmouth failed to find a way past Man of the Match Jack Bonham.

It was a frustrating afternoon on the South Coast for Kenny Jackett’s Portsmouth. His side was weakened by international call-ups but he chose not to postpone the Gillingham game at the weekend to try and build some momentum at his under-performing Pompey.

But Gills were able to withstand the barrage on Saturday and they’ve goalkeeper Jack Bonham to thank - the 26-year-old with a selection of saves throughout the contest to keep the scores at nil.

It’s given both Jackett and Gillingham manager Steve Evans plenty to think about over the week, as the latter sits one point and one place above Pompey in 15th in League One.

Here we take a look at three things we’ve learned about Gillingham after the weekend:

Still searching for their first away win

Gillingham are still in search of their first away win of the season in any competition. Of six away games in League One so far, Evans side have mustered just four points and scored as many goals in the process.

Portsmouth showed their dominance on Saturday and if it weren’t for Bonham’s heroics in goal it would’ve been a straightforward win for the home side - Gillingham offered very little at Fratton Park, having just 31% of the ball and registering just the single shot on target.

An asset at the back

Though it’s only his third clean sheet of the season, Gillingham goalkeeper Jack Bonham proved his worth at Fratton Park at the weekend.

A former Watford youth player, Bonham faced 12 shots on Saturday and eight corners as he took the Man of the Match award, having frustrated Pompey all afternoon with his saves.

Gillingham have a real asset in Bonham, and he’ll be a crucial part of any success Gillingham have this season - Evans will be hoping he's not subject to interest come January.

Disciplinary on the road

Gillingham picked up five yellow cards against Portsmouth on Saturday - that’s ten yellow cards in their last four outings in all competitions and 13 from seven away games in League One.

Not to say Evans is encouraging his team to ‘play dirty’ away from home, but it certainly suggests a change of tactics when on the road.

His side gave away a number of cheap fouls on Saturday, as they tried to run the clock down to take the 0-0. Five yellows in a single match is fairly extortionate, and Evans will hope that it won't haunt his team further down the line with suspensions.
