Charlton Athletic gave themselves a huge advantage going into their second leg game against Doncaster Rovers yesterday, bagging a 2-1 win at the Keepmoat.

Whilst away goals don’t count at this stage, it’s still a morale-boosting win which gives them a wonderful chance of advancing to the final where either Portsmouth or Sunderland lay in wait.

It’s been a monumental effort by the Addicks to get into the play-offs at all, but to now find themselves one step from Wembley was as much as expected.

They’ve been underdogs in the hunt for promotion all season, but after their great form of late they were expected to turn over Grant McCann’s Doncaster.

The late goal does leave the game poised delicately, with Doncaster having a hill to climb rather than a mountain.

Here’s three things we learned from yesterday’s game.

Joe Aribo is Class

What a player this boy is. There’s been lots of talk about his talents this season, but he’s excelled when it really matters.

He’s bagged in four consecutive games now and the next 90 or 180 minutes will surely be his last in a Charlton shirt.

They’re Ruthless

The other play-off matches have been about missed chances, red cards and what might have been, but Charlton perhaps gave the most straightforward display of composure and focus.

There wasn’t a defining incident, a moment everything turn on. It was just a routine win and a good one at that.

Nobody will want them at Wembley

They’re the only side in the bottom two divisions to register an away win in their play-off game. They’ve won eight of their last nine fixtures and are right on form at the moment.

This win only builds the fear others must have when thinking ahead to a possible final.
