Charlton Athletic will be the side to head to the Championship next season from the League One Play-Off final after beating Sunderland at Wembley yesterday afternoon.

The Addicks went into the game as the form team but actually found themselves behind early on.

A bizarre own goal saw a Naby Sarr backpass roll under the feet of goalkeeper Dillon Phillips and into the empty net.

However, the Addicks did not allow themselves to wilt after such a blow and grew into the game, eventually getting level via Ben Purrington converting a cross from the right-hand side.

After a largely cagey second half, things started to pick up towards the end of the game and eventually the men from South East London broke through, with Patrick Bauer scoring a last-gasp winner.

A fine display from the men from the Valley, then, and here are three things we took from the performance...

Charlton have great mental strength

Charlton could have been forgiven for letting that odd own goal getting the better of them but they grew into the game and were brave enough to get on the ball and play.

They're a very tight-knit unit and yesterday afternoon they once again displayed their never say die attitude.

Lee Bowyer is the best man for the job

Bowyer has done a job at Charlton that very few would really be able to match.

Despite continued problems at boardroom level, he's managed to bring the rest of the club together.

He has to be at the club next season.

Jonny Williams could be a star next season

Josh Cullen and Lyle Taylor had excellent games among others for the Addicks but when Williams came on they had an extra spring in their step.

He got on the ball and quickly started winning fouls and causing Sunderland issues.

He could be a real asset next season for the men from the Valley in the second tier.
