Cardiff City picked up their second win of the season last night as Junior Hoilett grabbed an 88th-minute winner in a 2-1 victory against Huddersfield Town.

It was a remarkably improved performance from the 3-0 thumping they suffered at the hands of Reading on Sunday.

Cardiff dominated early proceedings against a Huddersfield side that were playing for the first time since the sacking of manager Jan Siewert on Friday night.

Joe Ralls opened the scoring for the home side, working himself some space through a bit of smart footwork and then curling the ball into the corner.

Nathaniel Chalobah pulled the visitors back into it after the half, sneaking in a long-range shot from outside the box, but Hoilett would have the last laugh as his deflected shot sealed the win for the Bluebirds.

It has been a rollercoaster of a start for Cardiff, who sit 12th with six points from two games, and it is difficult to tell how they are going to fare moving forward.

With that in mind, we have picked out THREE things we clearly learned from their 2-1 win against the Terriers.

They look a different side at home.

It was not just the result that was different from Sunday, Cardiff looked a much better side last night and dominated their opponents, having three times as many shots.

The Bluebirds have a 100% record at home this season, beating both Huddersfield and Luton Town.

Both times they have left it late to find a winner but have managed to drag themselves over the line.

Neil Warnock already has the most promotions in English football of any manager and making the Cardiff City Stadium a fortress could be vital if he is to make this his ninth.

Warnock’s side need to be more clinical.

Cardiff had three times as many shots (24) than the visitors last night but still required a late deflected goal to secure the three points.

Just six of those were on target, giving them a shooting accuracy of just 25%, and they will need to be more clinical moving forward.

Warnock told the BBC after the game that his side should’ve put the game to bed in the first half and that the fact that they didn’t allowed the Terriers back into the game, which “knocked the stuffing out of us”.

Both of Cardiff’s wins have now come from late goals in games when they had significantly more chances than their opponents, they need to be better in front of goal to ensure they don’t become reliant on late winners.

Lee Tomlin looks set to play a role

Tomlin’s appearance against Huddersfield was his first for the Cardiff first-team since January 2018.

It has not been an easy 18 months for the playmaker, spending time away from the club on loan at Nottingham Forest and Peterborough United, but he said in the summer that he was in the best shape of his life and it showed last night.

He pulled the strings early on for Cardiff and was heavily involved for them in the final third, nearly grabbing a goal on his return to the side as he curled one just wide after some smart link-up play.

If Tomlin can keep producing performances of this quality he should be a useful weapon for Warnock this season.
