There's the old cliché that football is a funny old game and that was never more evident than at Gigg Lane last night.

Bury have been one of the best sides in the fourth division, pushing leaders Lincoln City hard and threatening to steal the title from under them.

On the other hand, Cambridge United have had another disappointing season, struggling to get out of the bottom six and moving on to their second manager.

The scene was surely set for the shakers to win their game in hand and move to within two wins of the Imps.

Instead, they crumbled for the second home game in a row, conceding three without reply to not only miss their chance to get close to the Imps, but also remain behind MK Dons in third. With Mansfield hitting form once more, they're now in a fight to retain their place in the top three.

It was a remarkable evening of football, not least for Lincoln City fans, who saw their own title aspirations boosted without kicking a ball.

It taught us a thing or two about Bury as well, as we examine below.

They missed Danny Mayor

Mayor was sent off against Swindon and will serve a three-match ban, just at the wrong time for the Shakers.

They've got to face Colchester and Carlisle without him, both hoping for a play-off spot and that spells trouble.

He's a creative force and without him, they look devoid of ideas.

The off-field issues are clearly affecting the side

The club released a statement alluding to financial issues this week, with rumours of players not being paid circulating.

They looked like a demotivated squad last night, which seems to indicate those issues are affecting morale.

When they're bad, they're very bad

When they're good, Bury are the best footballing side in League Two, no doubt about it.

The trouble is, when they're bad, like last night, they're woeful.

They lacked fight and desire, something that hasn't really been evident since relegation at the end of last season.
