Bolton Wanderers were unable to build upon their recent 2-1 victory over Shrewsbury Town as they suffered a 1-0 defeat in their showdown with Sheffield Wednesday in League One.

Lee Gregory scored what turned out to be the winning goal for the Owls in the 66th minute as he fired past Trotters goalkeeper Joel Dixon.

Despite having 61% possession during this particular clash, Bolton were unable to break down a resilient Wednesday outfit at Hillsborough.

As a result of this setback, Bolton dropped to ninth in the League One standings.

Bolton need to be more clinical in-front of goal

Whilst Bolton did show glimpses of promise against Wednesday, they ultimately failed to deliver the goods in-front of goal in this particular clash.

Despite having 12 shots, only one of these efforts were on target as the Trotters were eventually made to pay for their failure to convert chances.

By addressing this particular issue in training, Bolton could potentially push on under the guidance of manager Ian Evatt.

The Trotters will need to improve their consistency if they are to challenge for a top-six finish

Having achieved promotion to League One earlier this year, it was always going to be intriguing to see how Bolton would fare at this level.

 

 

 

Whilst the Trotters have managed to produce impressive displays against the likes of Charlton Athletic and Ipswich Town this season, a lack of consistency has stifled their progress in recent weeks as they have lost three of their last five league games.

If Bolton are looking to challenge for a top-six finish this season, they will need to deliver the goods in League One on a regular basis.

Amadou Bakayoko should be given a chance to prove his worth against Wigan Athletic

When you consider that Eoin Doyle has failed to score in his last five league appearances for Bolton, it may be time for the forward to be replaced in the club's starting eleven by Amadou Bakayoko.

After scoring twice in the club's clash with Liverpool's Under-21 outfit in the EFL Trophy last week, the 25-year-old was utilised as a substitute by Evatt on Saturday.

Having been directly involved in 33 goals at this level during his career to date, Bakayoko ought to be confident in his ability to deliver a promising performance against Wigan Athletic this weekend at the University of Bolton Stadium.
