Blackburn Rovers were dealt another blow in their pursuit of a Championship play-off place on Friday afternoon, as they were beaten 2-1 by Peterborough United.

With the scores still goalless, Rovers were dealt a blow moments before half time, when Tayo Edun was sent off for a second yellow cards, leaving the visitors to play more than half the match with ten men.

Despite that, Blackburn did take the lead with around quarter of an hour remaining, when Ben Brereton-Diaz fired home from a tight angle inside the area.

However, that is not an advantage Tony Mowbray's side were able to hold onto for long, as goals in the last ten minutes from Sammie Szmodics and Jack Marriott completed a turnaroud for Peterborough that secured all three points for the hosts.

That will of course, have left Mowbray with plenty to think about ahead of Monday's clash with Stoke, so here, we've taken a look at three things we learnt about Blackburn from that defeat to Peterborough.

Players out of position proving costly

With Joe Rothwell unavailable due to illness, it was Edun - more naturally a left-back - who started in the centre of midfield, despite the presence of Bradley Johnson on the bench.

That is something that proved costly for Rovers, with Edun twice being caught out in the centre of the park to lead to his two yellows. Following that, Mowbray then withdrew right-back Ryan Nyambe to allow for Johnson's introduction in the centre of the park, meaning centre back Darragh Lenihan was forced to move to the right of a back four, having started the match in a back five.

While Mowbray will no doubt have had his reasons for using these players in unfamiliar roles - as he has often done throughout his tenure - it does him no favours when he makes those decisions, and they lead to results such as this.

A welcome strike for Brereton-Diaz

One small positive for Blackburn from that defeat to Peterborough, was the return of top scorer Ben Brereton-Diaz to the scoresheet.

The Chile international ended a run of nine games without a goal with his strike against Posh, when he clinically fired in from a tight angle, the type of finish he produced so often during the first half of the season.

With others having struggled to step up while the 22-year-old has been unable to fire due to form or fitness, the fact he now at least appears to have found some sort of scoring touch again, could offer hope that he could help guide Rovers to a respectable end to the season at least.

Broken records

It is a point Blackburn fans have made on many occasions now, but it is hard not to get away from the fact that the Ewood Park club just cannot find form during the second half of a Championship season.

That defeat at Peterborough means it is now just two wins for Rovers, in their last 14 games. Last season saw the club win just once in 15 after January, and the year before saw them win only three of their last 13 games, while there was a run of one win in 11 immediately after January during the 2018/19.

On all occasions, those runs have proven costly to the club's hopes of a top six spot, and given how often this has happened, it feels as though something has to change, which raises a few questions when you consider the significant alterations to the playing squad there have been over the four years this pattern has gone on for.
